On the divided island of Cyprus, the quiet motion of hands shaping lace and making cheese shed new light on a decades old conflict. To Your Hands is an experimental animated documentary that weaves together the stories of Cypriots who continue these handmade traditions, passed down for generations. Through intimate imagery and hand painted animation, the film reflects on how shared culture endures beyond political borders.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
To Your Hands is a meditation on cultural identity and connection. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, with the Greek-speaking Cypriot community in the south and the Turkish-speaking Cypriot community in the north.
I grew up in the south of Cyprus in the late ’90s/early 2000s, a time when the island’s border was still closed. I had no contact with anyone from the north, and like many in my generation, I inherited a one-sided view of the conflict.
This film became a way to gently challenge that narrative, not by focusing on the history of conflict and division, but by exploring what still unites us as Cypriots. It is a celebration of shared traditions and handmade practices passed down through generations.
